About two weeks ago I decided to resume my hibernating Pineapple Doily project. In fact I don’t think I should call it a doily anymore – it’s already a full sized tablecloth, and it’s not even finished yet. I decided that it will be a gift for my parents – they’ve recently bought a new table for their dining room and even though the table is rectangular, the tablecloth is big enough to cover it in full despite its round shape.

Crocheting each round takes a lot of time now, but I don’t really mind, since I’m really enjoying it. However, there is a problem (of course)! I’m running our of crochet thread, and I can’t find the same thread anywhere. I’m using Nilo No 8, and anything I could find in a yarn shop or on ebay is either different size (that’s what I get for choosing an unusual cotton thread size), or colour. So it seems that I won’t finish this project anytime soon – it’s going to hibernate while I’ll keep trying to find the right thread. I’m going to contact some yarn shop owners asking if they could order anything suitable, and post a request in my Facebook knitting and crochet group. Or, if it doesn’t work, just wait patiently until it’s available.
Another problem is that I really have no idea how to block it. I simply don’t have enough foam mat and even my bed, that I sometimes use to block larger projects (because I can pin the blocked object to it), will probably not be enough. I’m thinking to just use steam iron, and since it’s a tablecloth, it doesn’t have to be blocked with starch like a doily.
And while waiting for the right thread, I think I’m going to get back to knitting gloves. My Friend’s birthday is approaching, and a pair of nice gloves would be a great gift at this time of the year. Any excuse to knit is good! ๐
Wow Kat, you are clever. What an awesome gift for your parents โค

I think you’re going to have to call this “The Doily that Ate The World” –!! Hope you can find the right thread to finish it. It is going to be beautiful.
My father’s mother crocheted a pineapple table cloth that fit a rectangular table that seated 8. Since neither my brother nor I have heirs, it was gifted to my father’s niece on her wedding day.

That’s a good name, at least it’s going to eat my apartment ๐

That is a beautiful “doily”. I hope you find some matching thread soon. I would not have the patience to work with that small thread and detail.

Ooh beautiful! I love how it’s turning out, and hope you can find matching thread soon to continue on it. I can’t imagine how big it’s gonna get when it’s done – I can’t stop picturing it as a gorgeous lace umbrella, though! ๐

Umbrella is a very interesting idea, although lacy one wouldn’t work here in Ireland ๐ I actually keep thinking that it can be used as bedspread!

Then it would be a gorgeous bedspread indeed. โค

Oh and do you have carpet anywhere in your place? I just block on the carpet when an item is too big for my mats.

I don’t! Plus we have all doors open, otherwise my cats cause drama demanding access to all rooms, so it’s tricky to find a place safe from their claws ๐
