Cotton towels

20180524_172146.jpg

Some time ago I bought a few skeins of Drops Safran cotton yarn in two different shades of blue, with a thought of knitting a summer top. But I just really couldn’t find any top pattern that I wanted to knit with this yarn. Maybe because I have a dishcloth made with it and in my mind, this is just a dishcloth-y kind of cotton? I’m not sure, but eventually I just left it alone in my cotton box together with other scraps and leftovers from amigurumi toys.

And then beautiful weather came to Ireland, and we started spending as much time as possible outdoors, especially going hiking on the weekends. I love mountain hiking and rock climbing, and I used to do it a lot in the past, so getting slowly back on track was a great idea.

On the way to Christmas

20171215_111952

It’s the last week before Christmas and we haven’t really planned anything yet, meals included, but I’m feeling absolutely relaxed and stress-free about that. The only plan we’ve made was to go to the south of Ireland this week for a few days since we haven’t really had any kind of holidays this year. The plan included a stay in a SPA hotel, and I’ve been really looking forward to soaking in the Jacuzzi and sweating all the stress of the year in the sauna. In addition, we’ve planned a couple of interesting places to see. And guess what? That’s right, I’m sick again! I really don’t know what’s going on with me this year, I can’t recall anything like that since childhood when I used to be sick all the time but tonsillectomy took care of it. There is nothing left to remove now though so this solution is no longer an option 😉 Anyways, I am trying to cancel the reservation today and hopefully reschedule the stay to January but it may be tricky since the hotel has 48 hours cancellation policy and we were supposed to go there on Friday. I hope they will consider my argument that checking in starts at 4 p.m. (so I’m not in the 48 hours window yet) and won’t make me pay for a cancelled stay.

Well, to sum it up, I just gave up on making plans and stressing out about them. Luckily my wonderful Other Half has offered to prepare all our Christmas meals this year (usually we both prepare something from our national cuisine) and of course my Mum has added some yummy food to her Christmas gift package, so we won’t starve. I think my Mum secretly believes that I don’t have anything to eat here, even though I’ve gained weight and keep reminding her that there are two Polish stores in my neighbourhood, not to mention the huge shopping centre just across the street!

Falling leaves

20170511_142712

I’ve been knitting a lot recently. After my Morning Glory cardigan, I finished a sleeveless top which still needs to be blocked before I can take some photos and write about it (spoiler: I’m really not sure what to think about it). I have a lot of free time now, since my work is less intense these days, but it also keeps me at home as I have to be close to the PC most of the time. This, of course, is a perfect crafting situation 🙂

After all this knitting I felt the sudden need to crochet something. And it was a brilliant opportunity to clear up my cotton stash a little. I have a lot of cotton yarn that I’d bought long ago for amigurumi, and then I focused on other projects and never crocheted those toys. I also really needed new coasters and cotton yarn is perfect for that.

Almost woven

Time’s flying fast these days and I’m stressed out with the deadlines hanging upon me even though I’m enjoying my work at the same time. But no matter how much there is to be done professionally, I just can’t stay away from crocheting. I’m completely addicted – hooked is the better word I guess.

I realise, looking back at the last year, that it’s been crocheting that kept me going. There have been some worse days and even months, especially summer was rough for me as I have a chronic disease and I was in a flare up then. Luckily not the real strong flare up, but still it wasn’t quite as pain-free and careless summer as I’d like it to be. I also didn’t feel very strong and couldn’t really enjoy the sunny days fully, even though I had a lot of free time, as summer is a work-free period of the year for me. But crocheting, the power to create, was something that gave me strength. I know it probably sounds like such a cliche, and I generally dislike such big statements and words, but it’s true. I’m so glad I re-discovered it after all those years! There is just something so special about turning the thread into a finished product with my own hands.

So, to keep on track of what this post was to meant to be about, I wanted to share my simple projects made while working. I used up nearly all of the aran weight cotton (different brands) that’s been in my stash for months and I had no idea what to do with it, as it turned out to be too thick for amigurumi. But it worked just great for dishcloths and hand towels that I can use to dry my hands after washing up in the kitchen. Cotton absorbs water well (mercerised cotton wouldn’t do the trick so well though) and it’s nice and friendly even for sensitive skin.

Hibernating

Hello! I hope everyone is fine and enjoying these first days of October!

Autumn finally arrived and it already feels colder. I started using one of the heaters and feel tempted to open another one, but I still feel it’s better to keep it for the real winter. Kind of silly thinking because hey, when it gets colder I could just adjust the settings, but for now I’m surviving with one heater on. And when it gets rough I can always use these crocheted legwarmers:

I made them many months ago, to use up the leftovers from the bulky star-shaped bedroom rug, and they’d been waiting patiently in my wardrobe ever since. But now is their time! Unfortunately, the pom-poms had to be removed, as they were too tempting for my cats who kept hunting them all the time. And as much as I adore my cats, I also prefer when my legs are not scratched.
