One Day Project

A quick update about a quick project – a new winter hat!

It took a day (well, not a full day really, I think maybe 2-3 hours total – a little bit in the morning, and the rest in the afternoon), I enjoyed it, and I like the new hat. Just good things!

I followed a pattern called Finlandia by Paige Buursma, and I suppose that it owes its name to the lacy Spruce trees repeated in three rounds from the rib to the crown, just like in Finland’s boreal forests. I liked it, in Dublin winters I don’t need very thick head protection, so adding these lacy elements makes the hat more suitable here. It was also perfect for that one lonely skein of grey Malabrigo Rios that’s been in my stash since forever. It’s going to match my lacy crochet shawl that I use as a scarf in winter. Last spring I bought a red coat on the seasonal sale, and I can already see it all together looking well and feeling comfy.

Nothing like instant gratification from a quick and enjoyable project!

And to finish this short post, just a sneak peek at my new stitch markers. I didn’t really need them, but I wanted something silly and cute to cheer me up, and what’s better than stitch markers with tiny rubber ducks, colourful macarons and come buttered crumpets with a cup of tea? They’re from my most favourite Etsy store. And indeed, it worked!

The project at the top is another attempt to improve my mood, and I’ve been enjoying knitting it so far. But I’ll reveal more in the next post 🙂

So it’s winter!

Last time I posted here, I was surprised that it was already November. Time keeps flying fast and December has started; with its cold, short and rainy (that’s Irish winter: it rains instead of snowing, pretty much like during any other season, but the rain is colder and accompanied by equally cold wind) days, Christmas songs on the radio and me decorating our apartment with Christmas ornaments without any self control.

I’m really enjoying the cold weather and the darkness, they don’t seem hostile but friendly, and I try to take daily walks even on the worst days. I’m also in holiday mood and surround myself with shiny, red, green and white decorations. Even the lipstick I use these days is more red than usually, because Christmas! All of that is strange because I’m normally not a very sentimental or holiday-loving type of person. Maybe that’s just a sign of getting older?

On the way to Christmas

20171215_111952

It’s the last week before Christmas and we haven’t really planned anything yet, meals included, but I’m feeling absolutely relaxed and stress-free about that. The only plan we’ve made was to go to the south of Ireland this week for a few days since we haven’t really had any kind of holidays this year. The plan included a stay in a SPA hotel, and I’ve been really looking forward to soaking in the Jacuzzi and sweating all the stress of the year in the sauna. In addition, we’ve planned a couple of interesting places to see. And guess what? That’s right, I’m sick again! I really don’t know what’s going on with me this year, I can’t recall anything like that since childhood when I used to be sick all the time but tonsillectomy took care of it. There is nothing left to remove now though so this solution is no longer an option 😉 Anyways, I am trying to cancel the reservation today and hopefully reschedule the stay to January but it may be tricky since the hotel has 48 hours cancellation policy and we were supposed to go there on Friday. I hope they will consider my argument that checking in starts at 4 p.m. (so I’m not in the 48 hours window yet) and won’t make me pay for a cancelled stay.

Well, to sum it up, I just gave up on making plans and stressing out about them. Luckily my wonderful Other Half has offered to prepare all our Christmas meals this year (usually we both prepare something from our national cuisine) and of course my Mum has added some yummy food to her Christmas gift package, so we won’t starve. I think my Mum secretly believes that I don’t have anything to eat here, even though I’ve gained weight and keep reminding her that there are two Polish stores in my neighbourhood, not to mention the huge shopping centre just across the street!
